SOAK
12 - 18 Jun 2017 What is it to be nude? By moving her studio into the bathroom, Ponsonby’s sitters are presented in an environment where nudity most naturally abides; where the vulnerabilities sometimes associated with nakedness are replaced by comfort and security.
Water plays a central role in exploring this theme. Bodies and minds surrender to it, forming unintentional and unconscious positions of weightlessness. And, like a lens, warm water and steam force a new perspective on the body, preventing preconceived ideas on form from making their way into the work.
Applying mediums of honeyed beeswax, oil and ink, Ponsonby’s work literally scratches away the surface of privacy.
SOAK offers a glimpse into a state we can all identify with, but so rarely reflect on – the unfettered joy of real nudity.
